After an exciting Demo Day yesterday, Sanofi US has announced Connect & Coach™ as the winner of the 2013 Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge – Prove It!. Connect & Coach™ is the first hybrid clinical and consumer application for Registered Dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators to help educate the diabetes community. This morning, Sanofi US awarded the winning team $100,000 to further develop its novel solution to help improve health outcomes for millions of people living with diabetes in the US.

Yesterday, the five finalist teams presented their concepts in front of an expert panel of judges on the mainstage at Health Datapalooza IV, the nation’s premier health data event. The event drew over 2,000 attendees, creating a truly inspiring environment for the big reveal. A vibrant crowd of entrepreneurs and healthcare advocates watched as each team took to the stage, sharing the results of months of hard work and progress during the Challenge.

The PHRQL team started Connect & Coach™ in 2011 as a design project at Carnegie Mellon University to improve the quality of life for people with diabetes and reduce healthcare costs. Connect & Coach™ enables cost-effective regular interaction between Registered Dietitians (RD) and Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE), and their clients. Designed for the retail supermarket or pharmacy setting, Connect & Coach™ enables RDs and CDEs to perform Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) services in the community where they are needed.

“As value-based and accountable care moves into communities, supermarkets will be part of the local healthcare ecosystem,” said Jane Sarasohn-Kahn, one of this year’s judges. “Connect & Coach exemplifies the ability to disrupt and enhance consumers’ local food system.”

Ginger.io and n4a Diabetes Care Center, winners of the 2011 and 2012 Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenges, have set incredible precedents for success following the Challenge, and Connect & Coach™ will surely continue the tradition. Congratulations to the winning team!
